вызывает воспаление оболочек головного мозга, можно было бы ожидать, что расположенные дальше от коры структуры мозга продолжают функционировать. Но это не так. Дело в том, что структурно-функциональной единицей коры является так называемый модуль — вертикальная колонка из шести слоев нейронов и нервных волокон, с поперечным диаметром каждой 0,2 — 0,3 мм. Горизонтальные волокна, вступая в связь с нейронами коры, обеспечивают широкое распространение в ней нервного импульса в ответ на сигналы, поступающие от таламуса, базальных ганглиев и ствола головного мозга. В каждом из шести слоев находится приблизительно равное количество тормозных и возбуждающих клеток. Верхние три слоя каждой колонки имеют тесный контакт с оболочками мозга, а потому менингит существенно нарушает функции всех колонок, включая тормозные и возбуждающие клетки. Именно модульное строение коры позволяет менингиту полностью поразить ее. Принимая во внимание, что в моем случае имело место семидневное отсутствие неврологических функций, а также агрессивность инфекции, представляется маловероятным, что у меня продолжали функционировать глубокие слои коры мозга.
7) Активность таламуса, базальных ганглиев и ствола головного мозга (подкорковых областей). Некоторые мои коллеги предполагали, что эти структуры могли продуцировать появление столь ярких и острых ощущений. На деле же ни одна из этих структур не могла играть какой-либо роли без наличия хотя бы нескольких нетронутых участков коры. В итоге все согласились, что сами по себе эти подкорковые структуры не могли вызвать интенсивную нейронную активность, необходимую для поразительно ярких и живых интерактивных ощущений.
8) Еще одна гипотеза: феномен «перезагрузки» мозга — беспорядочные разрозненные воспоминания, сохранившиеся в поврежденной коре мозга, которые могут ожить с возвращением интерактивного сознания после продолжительного отказа всего мозга. Поскольку у меня сохранились весьма подробные и отчетливые воспоминания обо всем, что со мной происходило, эту гипотезу тоже можно исключить.
9) Ну и последняя. Необычное воспроизведение памяти древним зрительным центром преимущественно наблюдается у птиц с их хорошо развитым средним мозгом, но крайне редко — у человека. Это явление характерно для слепых, потерявших зрение в результате повреждения затылочной доли мозга. Данная гипотеза также не объясняет реалистичности и разнообразия моих слуховых и зрительных переживаний.
